오늘 떠오른 가장 미친 생각은 다음 두 가지였다.

하나는, 하나의 행동을 오랜 시간 동안 반복하는 것. 다른 하나는, 내 시간 — 내 삶의 거의 모든 순간을 — ‘사고’와 연결짓는 것. (읽기, 쓰기 등과 관련된)

이 두 생각은 어떤 면에서 서로 얽혀 있다.

독일의 예술가 게하르 릭터의 「회색 회화(Grey Paintings)」 시기를 떠올려보라. 그는 오랜 시간 동안 오직 회색만을 반복해서 그렸다. 정확히 몇 점인지는 모르겠지만, 수백 점은 족히 될 것이다. 나는 그의 예술에 대해 깊이 알지는 못하지만, 거기서 내가 얻은 한 가지 통찰은 이것이다.

똑같은 행동을 계속해서 반복하라.행동, 지속적인 반복, 끊임없는 연속성에 몰입하는 그 자체가, 어쩌면 무력감과 불가능이라는 감각을 조금씩 갉아먹기 시작하는 것이다. 반복 속에서 무언가가 나타날지도 모른다. 무엇이 나타날지는 알 수 없다. 어쩌면 아무것도 나타나지 않을 가능성도 아주 크다.

그 목적은 해결(resolution)이 아니라, 오히려 불가능해 보이는 무언가를 불러내고, 끌어올리는 시도에 있다. 반복 그 자체가 하나의 발명 방식이 된다. 그것은 통합하고, 교란하며, 균열을 만든다 — 그 틈 사이로 새로운 의미가 스며들 수 있다. 마치 어둠 속에서 손을 더듬는 맹인처럼, 마치 이해할 수 없는 세계에 버려진 사람처럼, 우리는 그저 앞으로 더듬으며 나아간다.

이 과정은 ‘적극적인 무지(active ignorance)’를 요구한다 — 확실하지 않음을 기꺼이 받아들이고, 수수께끼를 끌어안는 태도. 바로 그 발명의 순간에, 놀라움이 찾아온다. 그리고 그 놀라움 안에는, 새로운 것을 마주할 가능성, 해방, 의미, 기존에는 닫혀 있었던 것에 갑작스레 접근할 수 있는 가능성이 숨어 있다.

The craziest ideas I came up with today were:

to repeat one thing over and over again for a sustained period of time; and to connect each and almost every moment of my time — my life — with “thought” (reading, writing, etc.).

The two ideas are, in a way, intertwined.

Consider the German artist Gerhard Richter’s Grey Paintings. That was a period in which he painted only grey — over and over again. Literally hundreds of grey paintings. I’m not sure exactly how many, but it was a lot. I won’t pretend to know much about his art, but here’s what I’ve taken from it: repeat the same action — again and again. The act of doing, of sustained repetition, of engaging in continuity, might create an unexpected, surprising moment. Through repeated action, something might emerge. We don’t know what. There’s a very real possibility that nothing will emerge.

The goal isn’t resolution, but rather the attempt to summon — to bring forth — what seems impossible. The very act of repetition becomes a method of invention. It integrates, disturbs, and opens cracks — brief lapses through which new meaning might slip in. Like a blind person reaching into darkness, like someone abandoned in an incomprehensible world, you grope forward.

This process demands active ignorance — a willingness to remain uncertain, to embrace enigma. It is precisely at the moment of invention that surprise arrives. In that surprise lies the possibility of encountering something new — a release, a meaning, a sudden access to what had previously remained closed and inaccessible.
