"Beyond the Black Smoke, Toward a Brighter Tomorrow"
This morning, black smoke covered the skies above the Kumho Tire factory in Gwangju. As I traveled from Naju, where I had shared the dream of balanced national development, toward Gwangju, I saw the sky darkened by thick, spreading smoke.

Was the sky just as dark 45 years ago—seen through the eyes of those whose lives ended that day? Moon Jae-hak, the youngest of the citizen militia who took his last breath at the Jeonnam Provincial Office, was just a year younger than I am. Today, his mother stood beside me and gave me her support.

Now, it is time not only to remember the past but to carry its spirit forward to shape a new future. Let us inherit the unfinished dream of young Jae-hak and walk together toward a future for all of us.

I, Lee Jae-myung, will become a faithful servant of the people. Together, we will realize the true Republic of Korea—one that leads the world. A future that shines even brighter on the foundation of democracy's light.

With the support and voices of encouragement you have given me today in Naju and Gwangju, I will make it happen. Now begins the real Republic of Korea.

오늘 아침, 광주의 금호타이어 공장에서 검은 연기가 하늘을 뒤덮었습니다. 나주에서 국가균형발전의 꿈을 나누고 광주로 넘어가는 길, 검은 연기가 퍼져 잔뜩 어두워진 하늘이 보였습니다.

45년 전 그들의 마지막 눈에 비친 하늘도 이렇게 어두웠을까요? 전남도청에서 마지막 숨을 거둔 막내 시민군 문재학. 저보다 한 살 어린 청년이었습니다. 오늘, 그의 어머니가 제 곁에 서서 지지를 보내주셨습니다.

이제 우리는 단순히 과거를 기억하는 것을 넘어, 그날의 정신으로 새로운 미래를 만들어갈 때입니다. 미완으로 남은 재학이의 꿈을 이어받아 우리 모두의 미래로 함께 나아갑시다.

저 이재명, 국민의 훌륭한 도구가 되겠습니다. 마침내 세계를 주도할 진짜 대한민국의 꿈. 민주의 빛을 바탕으로 더 밝게 빛날 미래의 빛. 오늘 나주와 광주에서 보내주신 여러분의 응원과 함성을 바탕으로 꼭 이뤄내겠습니다.

미 당국의 강압적 단속 앞에서 중국·일본·한국 정부가 조용히 공조했으며, 이재명 행정부는 국적을 가리지 않고 아시아 노동자들의 석방을 주도했다. 최근 더 타임스 와의 인터뷰에서 이재명 대통령은 동북아시아 지역에서 자신이 “교류와 협력의 다리”가 되겠다는 구상을 밝혔다. 미국과의 건설적 관계를 유지하면서도, 신냉전식 양극화가 한반도를 새로운 지정학적 대결의 최전선으로 내모는 상황에서 다리라는 은유는 대안을 시사한다. 그 구상이 가장 분명히 드러난 사례가 바로 최근 미국에서 발생한 아시아 노동자 구금 사태에 대응해 협력을 이끌어낸 그의 행보다. 미국 내 질서는 반중 정서로 점점 더 규정되며, 아시아계가 차별과 괴롭힘의 표적이 되고 있다. 조지아주에서 벌어진 이민세관단속국(ICE)의 대규모 단속은 특히 아시아계 노동자들이 얼마나 취약한지를 여실히 보여준다. 현대–LG에너지솔루션 배터리 공장을 겨냥한 이번 대규모 이민 단속은 그 대표적 사례다. 당시 ICE 요원들은 단 한 번의 작전으로 한국인 317명(남성 307명, 여성 10명)을 포함해 총 475명의 노동자를 체포했다. 미국 정부 스스로 전례가 없다고 인정한 이번 조치에서 구금자의 다수가 한국인이었다. 그러나 한국 정부의 신속한 협상 덕분에 316명의 한국인은 전세기를 타고 귀국할 수 있었고, 합법적 거주 신분을 지닌 한 명만이 미국에 남기를 선택했다. 많은 이들이 모르는 사실은 한국인만이 그물망에 걸린 것이 아니라는 점이다. 중국인 10명, 일본인 3명, 인도네시아인 1명을 비롯해 멕시코와 중남미 출신 25명을 포함한 수백 명이 함께 구금되었다. 다행히도 한국 정부의 조용하지만 단호한 외교 덕분에 모든 아시아 노동자가 석방되어 9월 12일 인천국제공항으로 향하는 한국 정부 전세기 편에 오를 수 있었다. 이 잘 알려지지 않은 사실에 주목할 가치가 있다. 한국 정부는 자국민뿐 아니라 중국·일본·인도네시아 등 아시아 이웃을 위해서도 협력했다. 실제로 서울의 ...
