2025년 6월 3일 실시된 한국 대통령 선거는 한국 민중 민주주의의 저력을 세계에 드러낸 역사적 사건이었다. 이 선거는 단지 국내 정치의 전환점에 그치지 않고, 주권과 정의를 위한 전 세계적 투쟁에서 중대한 전환점을 형성했다. 특히 주목할 점은, 이번 선거가 동북아에서 처음으로 글로벌 극우 세력을 민중의 힘으로 꺾어낸 사례라는 점이다.

따라서 극우 세력들이 벌써부터 한국 민주주의를 훼손하려는 움직임을 시작한 것은 놀라운 일이 아니다.

6월 24일, 30년 넘게 한국을 취재해 온 진보 언론인 팀 쇼록(Tim Shorrock)은 워싱턴 D.C.에서 열릴 예정인 국제 극우 언론 기자회견에 대해 경고했다. 그는 1980년 광주 학살 당시 미국의 개입을 최초로 폭로한 바 있는 언론인으로, 이번에도 미국-한국 극우 인사들이 주도하는 이 회견이 6월 3일 대선 결과에 대한 허위 조작설을 퍼뜨릴 것이라 경고했다. 이는 국민의 압도적 지지를 받아 이재명 대통령을 선출한 민주 선거의 정당성을 부정하려는 시도다.

쇼록은 자신의 SNS에서 다음과 같이 언급했다.

“내일 무더위 속에서, 고든 창(Gordon Chang)과 그 파시스트적 남성 극우 팀이 한국 민주주의에 선전포고를 할 것이다. 창은 현재 한국 내 누구도 제기하지 않는 황당한 음모론을 주장하고 있다. 정말이다. 한국의 어느 주류 언론도 이런 말을 하지 않는다.”

같은 날, 런던대학교의 진보적 학자인 오웬 밀러(Owen Miller) 박사 역시 페이스북을 통해 유사한 우려를 표명했다. 그는 미국의 CPAC이나 이스라엘 로비단체 AIPAC과 구조 및 영향력 면에서 유사한 조직인 One Korea Network(OKN) 및 KCPAC(한국보수정치행동회의)의 연대를 경계하며, 이들이 형성하고 있는 미-한 극우 미디어 및 정치적 공명체계는 매우 위험하다고 지적했다.

밀러 박사는 이번 기자회견을 통해 자칭 “국제 선거 감시단”이 파견되어 한국 대선을 조작 선거로 몰아가려는 시도를 예고했다. 이는 2020년 미국 대선에서 트럼프가 주장한 거짓 조작설을 그대로 반복하는 것으로, 한국 내 친쿠데타 정치인과 극우 폭력 집단을 부추길 위험한 외세 개입이라 지적했다. 그는 “워싱턴 D.C. 국립기자클럽은 이런 인사들이 기자회견을 개최하는 데 아무런 기준이 없는가?”라는 날카로운 질문을 던졌다.

사실, 이러한 극우 연대는 하루아침에 생겨난 것이 아니다. 문재인 정부 시절에도 그들은 활동했고, 윤석열 정권이 계엄령을 모의했을 때 더욱 활발해졌으며, 6월 3일 이재명 당선 이후에도 집요하게 활동을 이어가고 있다.

나는 이전에도 이 극우 국제 연대에 대해 글을 쓴 바 있다. 스티브 배넌(Steve Bannon), 고든 창, CPAC Korea 같은 조직들, 그리고 Fox News와 같은 미국 보수 미디어는 한국의 민주 항쟁을 ‘질서와 안보’를 위협하는 세력으로 규정하며 이를 악마화했다. 그러나 이들이 말하는 ‘질서’는 제국주의의 가면일 뿐이다.

그리고 이제 그들은 이재명 정부와 한국 민주주의 자체를 공격 대상으로 삼고 있다.

일각에서는 이들 극우 세력을 “듣는 사람도 없다”, “한국인은 그들을 진지하게 받아들이지 않는다”며 과소평가한다. 하지만 나는 그렇게 보지 않는다. 미국 극우 세력은 막대한 자금, 시민권 특권, 그리고 거대한 온라인 플랫폼을 바탕으로 전 세계적 내러티브를 왜곡하고, 거짓을 퍼뜨리는 데 능숙하다. 이들은 한국 극우 인사들과 협력해 서로의 메시지를 증폭시키는 방식으로 움직인다.

이런 공격이 본격화된 시점은 결코 우연이 아니다. 한국에서 윤석열 전 대통령에 대한 내란 혐의 수사가 시작된 바로 그 시점이며, 동시에 극우 세력이 서울 시내에서 연일 시위를 이어가고 있는 이 시점이기 때문이다.

또한 한 미국 진보 분석가이자 활동가는 한국의 상황이 미국 극우가 외국의 합법적 정부를 전복시키는 방식과 유사하게 흘러가고 있다고 지적했다. 그는 세르비아 사례를 들며, 서방 언론이 증폭시킨 근거 없는 부정선거 주장들이 어떻게 정당한 정부를 무너뜨리는 데 악용됐는지를 경고했다. 그는 미국 주류 언론이 아직은 침묵하고 있지만, 만약 이재명 대통령이 미국의 전략적 이해와 다른 독립 노선을 택한다면, 뉴욕타임즈와 같은 언론이 태도를 바꿔 공격에 나설 가능성도 배제할 수 없다고 보았다.

나는 이 예측에 동의한다.

하지만, 미국 극우 세력은 헛수고를 하고 있다. 그들은 한국 민주주의를 무너뜨릴 수 없을 것이며, 그들이 지지하는 트럼프에게도 아무 도움이 되지 않을 것이다. 한국인은 독재자와 반민주적 파시스트 협력자를 물리쳐온 오랜 역사를 가지고 있다. 윤석열의 계엄 쿠데타 시도 역시 국민의 저항에 의해 좌절되었다. 한국인은 싸워서 이긴다. 그러나 지금은 전 세계의 주목과 연대가 절실하다. 팀 쇼록을 비롯한 전 세계 진보 학자, 활동가, 분석가들의 연대에 감사를 표한다.

The June 3 South Korean presidential election—a powerful display of Korea’s grassroots democratic resilience—sent a clear message of defiance against the U.S.-led hegemonic order. It was more than a domestic political shift; it marked a global turning point in the struggle for sovereignty and justice. Most significantly, the election represented the first major grassroots defeat of the global far right in Northeast Asia.

So it comes as no surprise that far-right forces have already begun efforts to undermine Korean democracy.

On June 24, veteran progressive journalist Tim Shorrock—who has covered Korea for over three decades, including the U.S. role in the 1980 Gwangju Massacre—issued a warning on Twitter about an upcoming transnational far-right press conference in Washington, D.C. The event, organized by U.S.-Korean far-right operatives, is expected to promote baseless claims of fraud in South Korea’s June 3 election, which democratically elected Lee Jae-myung as president.

Shorrock wrote:

“In the hellish heat tomorrow, @gordongchang and his fascist all-male blackshirt team will declare war on South Korean democracy. Chang, the ringleader, is making claims that NO ONE IN KOREA IS MAKING outside of the lunatic far-right. Really! Check any mainstream Korean newspaper.”

That same day, Dr. Owen Miller, a progressive scholar at the University of London, voiced similar concerns on Facebook. He warned of a growing alliance between U.S. and South Korean far-right groups—specifically One Korea Network (OKN) and the Korea Conservative Political Action Conference (KCPAC)—which he likened in structure and influence to CPAC and even AIPAC. Miller described the emergence of a transnational far-right media and political echo chamber that links extremists in both countries.

He pointed to the so-called “International Election Monitoring Team,” which has been dispatched to discredit South Korea’s presidential election by making Trump-style allegations of voter fraud—baseless claims that echo the disinformation campaign surrounding the 2020 U.S. election. Miller sees this as a dangerous act of foreign interference that could embolden authoritarian forces in South Korea, including pro-coup politicians and violent far-right street groups. He posed a sharp question: Does the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. have any standards for who is allowed to hold a press conference on its grounds?

In truth, these far-right operations did not start overnight. They were active under the liberal Moon Jae-in administration, continued during Yoon Suk-yeol’s attempted martial law plan, and persist in the wake of the June 3 election that brought Lee Jae-myung to power.

I have written about this transnational far-right coalition that mobilized in defense of Yoon. Figures like Steve Bannon and Gordon Chang, organizations like CPAC Korea, and U.S. conservative media outlets such as Fox News all portrayed Korea’s democratic uprising as a threat to stability and the U.S.-ROK alliance. Cloaked in the language of “order” and “security,” they framed Korea’s grassroots movement as destabilizing—when in fact, it was a democratic reckoning. Behind their rhetoric lies imperial ambition.

And now, they are launching a formal attack on the Lee Jae-myung administration and South Korean democracy.

Some may dismiss these groups as fringe or irrelevant: “No one listens to them,” they say. “Koreans don’t take them seriously.” I beg to differ. The U.S. far right has a long record of undermining foreign governments. Backed by wealth, citizenship privilege, and massive online platforms, they are skilled at spreading lies and manipulating global narratives. They collaborate with Korean far-right actors, amplifying one another’s messages in a coordinated campaign.

It’s no coincidence that this offensive is escalating just as special prosecutors in South Korea have launched an investigation into impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol for insurrection. Nor is it accidental that Korean far-right groups continue to stage regular protests in Seoul.

A prominent U.S. progressive analyst and activist—deeply familiar with how the far right has destabilized legitimately elected governments abroad—recently made a pointed observation. He expressed alarm that South Korea is now being subjected to the same pattern of baseless accusations, drawing a parallel with Serbia, where false claims—amplified by Western media—ultimately helped bring down a legitimate government. He noted that these charges may not yet be front-page news in the United States, given Washington’s interest in gauging whether President Lee will align with its strategic priorities. But that calculus could quickly change if Lee asserts Korean sovereignty and pursues an independent path, major media outlets like The New York Times will likely take notice—and not necessarily in his favor.

I agree with his prediction.

But, these American far-right groups are wasting their time. They won’t succeed in undermining Korean democracy—nor will they help their supposed champion, Donald Trump. The truth is: Koreans have a long and proud history of defeating dictators and collaborators of anti-democratic fascists, including the latest insurrection attempt by Yoon Suk-yeol. Koreans will fight back—and win. But we need global attention on this issue. Thanks to Tim Shorrock and all like-minded progressive scholars, activists, and analysts around the world who continue to stand in solidarity.
