Dear Chairman Hwang Kyu-ho and Comrades of the Korean Progressive Coalition of Seattle,

Warm greetings to you all.

Today, as Israel’s airstrikes on Iran bring the world once again to the brink of war, I am reminded of how fortunate we were this past week to witness the inauguration of President Lee Jae-myung. It underscores just how crucial the role of a single leader can be. On this day, I am once again struck by the significance of the Light of Revolution and the birth of the Lee Jae-myung administration, which has prevented Yoon Suk-yeol’s reckless gamble with war.

I never imagined a day like this would come—but here we are. As Chairman Hwang so aptly put it in his opening remarks, “We have supported President Lee Jae-myung with one heart and walked this path together.” I have long supported Lee Jae-myung, but to be honest, I never truly believed the day would come when he would become president.

Let me briefly share a personal memory. I can't recall the exact moment I began supporting Lee, but I vividly remember meeting him on March 22, 2016, in Boston, when he was still the mayor of Seongnam. He had come to Harvard with more than ten aides to deliver a lecture on peace on the Korean Peninsula. A close friend of mine, a dentist, hosted a dinner reception in his honor at their home. One conversation from that night stands out: I mentioned that many young people today lean conservative, but my nieces and nephews support Lee Jae-myung. He smiled and said, “Perhaps that’s thanks to their aunt’s influence.”

Later that year, during his hunger strike in protest of Park Geun-hye’s neoliberal policies, I submitted an article to progressive U.S. media to raise awareness of his courageous action. I also supported him during his primary race against Moon Jae-in. And now, the day we only dreamed of has come. It reminds me—sometimes, you really do have to live long enough to see these things happen.

In just one week since taking office, President Lee has already achieved so much: he halted loudspeaker broadcasts toward North Korea, prompting the North to do the same; issued a stern warning against the launching of propaganda leaflets; paid tribute to the victims of the Itaewon disaster; and brought urgent national attention to the economic crisis. Prime Minister-designate Kim Min-sik has even compared the current economic conditions to those of the IMF crisis. We are already feeling the change.

Most importantly, President Lee has begun restoring the normal functions of government—something that had collapsed under Yoon Suk-yeol. I believe many of you feel as I do: it is a relief to finally have a president who works. Because of this, we too can now return to our own duties with renewed confidence. President Lee is a capable and effective leader.

Now, allow me to speak briefly about the challenge ahead: the Trump administration.

Even during the presidential campaign, the U.S. interfered in Korea’s domestic affairs more aggressively than at any time in recent memory. In my view, the Yoon regime and its plan for martial law were not separate from the broader context shaped by the Biden administration. From December 2024 to June 2025, far-right forces in both Korea and the U.S. relentlessly pressured Korea to crush the Light of Revolution and block Lee’s victory. And I expect even greater pressure to come.

Since 1945, the U.S. has maintained a dual-track policy: sanctions and isolation for the North, and strategic pressure under the guise of “alliance” for the South. But for progressive governments in South Korea, that pressure has been especially severe. Under a second Trump administration, we should anticipate harsh tariffs, anti-China pressure, a revival of Cold War rhetoric, the further militarization of Korea as a U.S. base, and renewed demands for increased defense cost-sharing.

So how should the Lee administration respond?

We cannot simply cling to the U.S.–ROK alliance. The U.S. views Korea solely through the lens of its own interests. But at the same time, given our geopolitical realities, a purely anti-American stance is not feasible. The solution lies with the people—the same people who achieved the Light of Revolution. Just because Lee has been elected does not mean our work is finished. Now is the time to dream bigger and act boldly. I call this next phase Light of Revolution 2.0.

The world is shifting toward a multipolar order. In this historic moment, Korea must become a nation grounded in the sovereignty of its people. This administration is not only a progressive government—it is a citizen-powered government. The people must now assert their sovereignty more powerfully than even the elected leaders.

There is only one way President Lee can succeed: the people, as the true agents of the Light of Revolution, must continue to exercise sovereign power. That is what will give him the strength to resist Washington’s pressure. If we kneel to Washington, we empower the far-right and the forces of insurrection. That would be surrender.

The same logic applies to economic policy. President Lee cannot succeed under a neoliberal framework. Within his first 100 days, we must pass a “100-Day Light of Revolution People’s Sovereignty Economic Reform Act.” This must include repealing Yoon’s tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, introducing tax relief for workers and the middle class, and expanding domestic demand through bold, progressive reforms.

Only by meeting these challenges head-on can we build the successful presidency we all long for.

And yet, we know: the road ahead will not be easy. President Lee and the people of the Light Revolution will soon face wave after wave of attacks, challenges, and criticisms—like arrows flying from every direction. The journey forward may be even harder than the one behind us. And yes, there will be those who give up, run away, or even betray us.

But I choose to see today’s gathering as a moment of preparation for that time.

Over the past six months of the Revolution, I faced many personal difficulties. At times, I turned to fiction, reading novels to stay grounded. One theme from a novel stayed with me: “We may be writing the story that our descendants will one day read.”

We don’t yet know how that story will end. But one question remains: What kind of characters will we be in that story of Light of Revolution 2.0?

As for me, I want to be remembered as someone who acted with courage, even when hope seemed lost.

What kind of character will you be in the story of this new revolution?

I apologize if I’ve spoken too much about policy on a day of celebration. But once again, I sincerely congratulate all of you on President Lee’s victory—and I’m truly moved to see the comrades who have walked this long road together gathered here today.

이스라엘의 이란 공습으로 전 세계가 다시 전쟁의 공포에 휩싸이고 있습니다. 이러한 상황 속에서, 이재명 대통령의 취임과 지난 한 주가 얼마나 다행스러운 일이었는지를 새삼 느끼게 됩니다. 지도자 한 명의 역할이 얼마나 막중한지 절실히 깨닫는 순간입니다. 윤석열의 전쟁 도박을 막아낸 '빛의 혁명'과 이재명 정부의 탄생이 얼마나 소중한지를 다시금 실감하게 되는 오늘입니다.

이런 날이 정말 올 줄은 상상도 못했지만, 드디어 이 자리에 함께하게 되었습니다. 황규호 대표님의 개회사처럼 “우리는 한마음으로 이재명 대통령을 지지하며 함께 걸어왔다”고 하셨지요. 저 역시 이재명 대통령을 꾸준히 지지해왔지만, 솔직히 그분이 대통령이 되는 날이 실제로 올 거라고는 온전히 믿지 못했습니다.

개인적인 기억을 하나 떠올려보고자 합니다. 제가 정확히 언제부터 이재명 대통령을 지지하게 되었는지는 모르겠지만, 2016년 3월 22일, 성남시장 시절 보스턴에서 처음 뵌 날은 지금도 생생히 기억납니다. 평화와 한반도에 관한 강연을 하시기 위해 열 명이 넘는 수행원과 함께 하버드를 방문하셨죠. 당시 제 친구, 치과의사 한 분이 자택에서 만찬을 열어주셨고, 저도 그 자리에 함께했습니다. 그날의 대화 중 하나가 기억에 남습니다. 제가 “요즘 젊은 세대는 보수적인데, 제 조카들은 이재명 시장님을 지지하더라”고 말하자, 대통령께서 미소 지으며 “그건 이모의 영향 아니겠습니까?” 하고 말씀하셨지요.

이후 박근혜 정권의 신자유주의 정책에 맞서 성남시장으로 단식투쟁을 하실 때, 저는 미국 진보언론에 기고문을 보내 그 투쟁을 알리려 노력했습니다. 또 문재인 후보와의 경선에서도 저는 이재명 후보를 지지했습니다. 그리고 이제, 그날이 도래했습니다. 정말 사람은 오래 살아야 이런 일도 겪는구나 싶습니다.

취임 단 일주일 만에 이재명 대통령께서는 많은 일을 해내셨습니다. 대북 확성기 방송을 중단시키고, 북측도 이에 응답하게 하셨습니다. 대북전단 살포에 대해 단호히 경고하시고, 이태원 참사 희생자들에게 공식적으로 애도를 표하셨습니다. 무엇보다도 경제 위기에 대한 경각심을 환기시키셨습니다. 김민식 국무총리 후보자는 지금의 경제 상황을 IMF 시절에 비견할 만큼 심각하다고 했지요. 변화는 이미 현실이 되었습니다.

무엇보다 중요한 점은, 윤석열 정권 아래에서 무너졌던 국정운영의 정상화를 이끌기 시작하셨다는 점입니다. 아마 여러분도 저와 같은 마음일 겁니다—“이제야 대통령다운 대통령이 생겼구나.” 그래서 우리도 다시 각자의 자리로 돌아가 자신감을 가지고 역할을 해나갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 대통령은 유능하고 준비된 지도자입니다.

이제 하나의 도전에 대해 간단히 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 바로 미국과 트럼프 행정부의 등장입니다.

대선 기간 동안에도 미국은 한국 내정에 그 어느 때보다 노골적으로 개입했습니다. 제 생각에, 윤석열 정권의 계엄령 시도는 바이든 정부 하에서 형성된 국제 정세와 무관하지 않습니다. 2024년 12월부터 2025년 6월까지, 한미 극우 세력은 빛의 혁명을 분쇄하고 이재명 후보의 당선을 저지하기 위해 쉼 없이 압박을 가했습니다. 앞으로는 더 큰 압박이 예상됩니다.

1945년 이후 미국은 북에는 제재를, 남에는 ‘동맹’이라는 이름의 압박을 동시에 유지해왔습니다. 그러나 진보 정권에게 그 압박은 늘 더 가혹했습니다. 트럼프 대통령의 고율 관세, 반중국 압박, 신냉전 언설, 한국의 미군기지화, 방위비 분담금 인상 요구 등이 등장할 것입니다.

그렇다면 이재명 정부는 어떻게 대응해야 할까요?

한미동맹에 무조건 집착할 수는 없습니다. 미국은 한국을 자국의 국익 프레임으로만 보기 때문입니다. 그렇다고 우리의 지정학적 현실을 무시하며 반미 노선을 택할 수도 없습니다. 해답은 빛의 혁명을 이뤄낸 ‘국민’에게 있습니다. 이재명 대통령이 당선되었다고 해서 우리의 과제가 끝난 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 이제가 더 큰 꿈을 꾸고 행동할 때입니다. 저는 이것을 ‘빛의 혁명 2.0’이라 부르고 싶습니다.

국제질서는 다극체제로 전환되고 있습니다. 이 전환기의 중심에서 한국은 어느 때보다도 ‘국민주권’에 기초한 국가로 거듭나야 합니다. 이 정부는 시민의 힘으로 만들어진 정부입니다. 이제 국민이 지도자보다 더 강하게 주권을 주장할 때입니다.

이재명 대통령이 성공하려면 단 하나의 길밖에 없습니다. 빛의 혁명을 이룬 국민이 주권자로서 계속 힘을 행사해야 합니다. 그것이 대통령에게 미국의 압력을 버텨낼 힘을 줄 수 있습니다. 우리가 워싱턴 앞에 무릎 꿇는 순간, 극우세력과 반란세력을 다시 살려주는 셈입니다. 그것은 항복입니다.

경제 정책도 마찬가지입니다. 신자유주의 아래에서는 이재명 대통령이 성공할 수 없습니다. 저는 집권 초기 100일 안에 ‘100일 국민주권 경제개혁법’을 반드시 통과시켜야 한다고 생각합니다. 이는 윤석열 정권이 단행한 부자·대기업 감세를 되돌리고, 서민과 중산층의 세금을 낮추며, 내수를 대담하게 확대하는 진보적 경제 정책을 포함해야 합니다.

이 과제들을 이뤄내야만, 우리가 모두 꿈꾸는 성공한 이재명 정부가 가능해질 것입니다.

그러나 이제부터가 진짜 시작입니다. 대통령과 빛의 혁명 국민에게는 수많은 도전과 공격, 비판이 화살처럼 쏟아질 것입니다. 우리가 걸어온 길보다 더 험한 길이 기다리고 있을 것입니다. 그리고 틀림없이 가장 먼저 포기하고 도망치고 배신하는 이들도 생길 것입니다.

하지만 저는 오늘 이 자리가 그런 날들을 대비하는 시간이라고 생각합니다.

지난 6개월간의 빛의 혁명 속에서 저 역시 많은 어려움을 겪었습니다. 견디기 위해 소설책을 많이 읽었고, 그중 한 권에서 만난 주제가 제 마음에 오래 남았습니다: “우리는 지금, 후손들이 언젠가 읽게 될 이야기를 쓰고 있는지도 모른다.”

그 이야기의 결말은 아직 아무도 모릅니다. 하지만 한 가지 질문은 남습니다—우리는 그 이야기에서 어떤 인물로 남게 될까요?

저는 희망이 보이지 않는 순간에도 용기 있게 행동하는 사람으로 기억되고 싶습니다.

여러분은 ‘빛의 혁명 2.0’ 이야기 속에서 어떤 인물로 기억되고 싶으신가요?

오늘 이 자리는 이재명 대통령 취임을 축하하는 자리이건만, 제가 너무 많은 정책 이야기를 한 것은 아닌가 걱정됩니다. 그럼에도 다시 한번, 대통령 당선을 진심으로 축하드리며, 오늘 이렇게 오랜 세월 함께 걸어온 동지 여러분과 마주하게 되어 정말 기쁩니다.
